Abstract: The three wooden sculptures in the New Palace of Arnstadt (Castle Museum) are part of a small art
collection of religious themes. They are representations of Anna Selbdritt, an angel and a Pieta. The
three sculptures are carvings of high quality, created between the early 16th and 18th century.
Through the years the surfaces of the sculptures have been treated and repainted several times. The
pieces show damages to a different degree on the wooden carrier material as well as the surface
layers. The artistic quality and beauty of the Pieta sculpture has been spoilt by bad repainting.
Comprehensive scientific and art historic investigations regarding the origin, iconography, technology
and painting techniques on all three sculptures have been carried out. As a result of this project the
sculpture of Anna Selbdritt was restored. The other two sculptures were cleaned and preserved and
a restoration concept was prepared. Finally proposals for the appropriate display of the three pieces
in the New Palace have been developed.
